<![CDATA[Just saw Wonkette on CNN. She’s being treated like a curiosity rather than as having a real perspective. The discussion with Anderson Cooper was about technology, not politics. And Wonkette’s pretty awful, since she presents as a snotty Valley Girl rather than someone who has developed an understanding of the political scene. Blackberry messaging is “the new crack,” according to Wonkette (who has a real name on the air), a line she stole from about four years ago.
This is going to be embarrassing if she doesn’t start to see things differently than every other dazzled newbie at a convention; and she can’t rip off Molly Ivin’s lines about delegates being more interested in free food if she wants to make a mark on the collective consciousness. As it stands, this is a case of brainless journalism putting bloggers on display, asking them stupid questions—and, worse, getting stupid answer—to reassure themselves that their jobs with the network are safe.
Having built a webcast news network in my day, I can only urge bloggers to resist being presented as a prop for brainless TV journos.

The reasons why the mainstream media have embraced and adopted Wonkette almost instantly are the following:
– She’s all snark and no substance, silly colorful commentary that our synthetic, plastic McNews media like so much. Think Maureen Dowd with a blog.
– Wonkette is married to a D.C. journalist, so she was already part of the “in” circle. She’s OK with the “in” crowd. She was already attending the right parties.
– Her blondness and “valley girl” demeanor fits very, very well in the new CNN (Kelly Wallace, Kelly Arena, Paula Zahn, Judy Woodruff, etc…) They all embody the image oft he brainless bimbette that can read a TelePrompter, giggle at silly political stunts, and discuss nail polish colors at ease.
Nobody should be surprised here.

LOVE LETTER TO THE BLOGOSPHERE
Gave a book-related lecture earlier tonight at Johns Hopkins. Many thanks to the JHU College Republicans for a good time. There were a few unhinged malefactors, but it was otherwise a low-key event (especially compared to this). Was excited to…
