<![CDATA[Regardless whether Kerry pulls an astonishing win out tonight, the next four years—the next decade—will be very hard for the Democratic party as it struggles to find the social issues that counteract the extremist views that drive the Republican base. That gay marriage was a key driver of Bush voters, based on the trouncing of gay marriage in every state where it reached the ballot, is a testament to the narrow appeal of Democratic social issues.
Take a look at Washington state, where both Senate seats and the Governor’s office (apparently) are now held by women. This is a laboratory for progressive politics that appeal to women voters. Here is where we can establish the language that will translate into an activated base every election.
The Pacific Century will be led by the West, folks, so let’s get to work to prevent the wall between church and state from being torn down to allow a Christian Taliban to dictate what ideas are acceptable, to preserve civil rights so that our children will be free to think new thoughts rather than parroting the country’s leadership, to preserve the right to choose what to do with one’s own body or one’s own cells against the coat-hangar morality of the extreme right. We must fight to preserve American pragmatism in the sciences from ideological limits to prevent a tumble from the heights of economic and scientific innovation into a dark age.
As it is, it looks like the man who hears God’s voice will be in charge for another four years. Watch Ohio for the river card that turns this whole thing around. But, even then, Democrats must ask hard questions of themselves about how to reestablish the emotional connections it had with the middle class in the Roosevelt through Kennedy years.
Four years of hard work, even if it is under a Bush presidency, is better than not knowing what you’re up against. It’s good to have the election largely behind us.]]>
