Almost all of the weaknesses he cites (the lack of an organization, a coherent political message, and cross-ethnic support) are really strengths. If popular support was a factor, the insurgency would have died in its cradle over a year ago, when the US enjoyed even wider support than it does today.

There isn’t a damned thing the U.S. military can do to stabilize Iraq until Iraq has a stable and accepted government in place, supported by an adequate military and security apparatus. Iraqis don’t want cretans running around blowing people up any more than anyone else does.
Come to think of it, maybe we ought to offer a couple Marine divisions $100k per year per Marine if they take out Iraqi citizenship and join the Iraqi army. Got to be a lot cheaper than billing $80 billion to the credit card every 6 months or so.
