In the space of a few years, Weblogs have gone from the province of chatty geeks into mainstream culture and political thought. But the way awards are bestowed on the best blogs remains a strange brew of popularity contests, online campaigning and secretive judging. And that’s not far off from the chaotic nature of blogging itself, eschewing academies of voters, esteemed panels and award hardware.

For a medium—or whatever you want to call the practice of blogging—that prides itself for standing apart from the traditions of previous media, bloggers seem ironically fixated on winning awards, giving one another awards and generally campaigning for awards…. I was reading on a podcasting list the other day about people’s interest is starting an annual award for best podcast.
Seems to me we’ve got to deal with fundamentals before we all get focused on the decorative wrapping.]]>

I think it can also be seen as early and passionate enthusiasm for something people just know in their bones is worthy of support, development and encouragement. Something as personally involving as blogging thrives and grows on recognition, even in the long long tail … another one of those human nature things.

I agree that is the case, but I think it is distracting for a lot of people. They start talking about getting votes, instead of producing their programs. It is important to marketing a show, but right now we’re still figuring out what a “show” is….
