Quitting my job to run kottke.org full-time is possibly the dumbest economic decision I’ve ever made in my life. This undertaking so isn’t about the money. (I’m gonna link to Ludicorp’s about page here because their corporate philosophy matches well with my philosophy in approaching this.) At best, my goal is to make about 1/3 to 1/2 of my former yearly salary to support my efforts here for a year. I have no idea whether this goal is even remotely achievable…only the hope that it is and the desire to make it happen. Like I said, dumb economic decision.
Jason Kottke is giving up his job to focus on blogging full time, and I applaud him. He’s taking a no-advertising approach and good for him. I don’t think it’s viable, but it is a push in the right direction. On a related note, Marqui has indicated that they want me to continue with their sponsorship program even though I don’t write reviews, comments or other stuff about their product. Offering to share the attention readers and commenters are kind enough to grant me does have some economic value—at least it has produced more cash than previous tip jar campaigns. (Snarky comments welcome).
The spirit Jason is talking about is INDEPENDENCE and there are many paths to independence.]]>
